What‘s Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil, a technique dating back to the 19th century, distinguishes itself from gold plating through its method of applying gold onto sterling silver. While both processes share similarities, gold vermeil requires a substantially thicker gold layer, typically exceeding 2.5 microns. This thickness, five times that of standard gold plating, results in a markedly more robust finish, enhancing the durability and longevity of the jewellery.
All pieces at 33JS are made with the vermeil plating technique, using a 925 sterling silver base and 18k gold vermeil.
What Are the Main Differences Between Gold Vermeil and Gold Plated?
Here are the main technical differences between gold plated and gold vermeil:
1. Base Metal Composition:
- Gold Plated: Gold plated jewellery is typically made by applying a thin layer of gold onto a base metal such as brass, copper, or stainless steel. The thickness of the gold layer can vary but is generally quite thin, often measured in microns.
- Gold Vermeil: Vermeil jewellery starts with a base metal of sterling silver, which is then coated with a thicker layer of gold. The gold layer in vermeil jewellery must be at least 2.5 microns thick and is achieved through electrolysis or fire-gilding.
2. Thickness of Gold Layer:
- Gold Plated: The gold layer in gold plated jewellery is relatively thin, typically ranging from 0.5 to 3 microns. This thin layer can wear off over time with regular use, exposing the base metal underneath.
- Gold Vermeil: Gold vermeil jewellery features a significantly thicker layer of gold compared to gold plated jewellery. The gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick, providing greater durability and longevity.
3. Durability and Longevity:
- Gold Plated: Due to its thin gold layer, gold plated jewellery is less durable and may tarnish or wear off with frequent use, exposure to moisture, or contact with harsh chemicals.
- Gold Vermeil: Gold vermeil jewellery is more durable and longer-lasting due to its thicker gold layer. The sterling silver base adds to its durability, and with proper care, vermeil jewellery can maintain its appearance for an extended period.
4. Quality and Appearance:
- Gold Plated: While gold plated jewellery can have a shiny and attractive appearance initially, the thin gold layer may lack the depth and richness of higher-quality gold finishes.
- Gold Vermeil: Gold vermeil jewellery typically boasts a richer and more luxurious appearance due to its thicker gold layer. The combination of sterling silver and gold creates a high-quality finish that is often indistinguishable from solid gold jewellery.
In summary, while both gold plated and gold vermeil jewellery involve the application of gold onto a base metal, vermeil offers superior durability, longevity, and quality due to its thicker gold layer and sterling silver base.
Is Your Jewellery Waterproof?
While 18k gold vermeil is more resistant to tarnishing and wear compared to standard gold plating, it is not entirely waterproof. The sterling silver base of vermeil jewellery can still be affected by prolonged exposure to moisture, such as water from swimming, showering, or heavy sweating. While occasional contact with water may not cause immediate damage, it's best to remove vermeil jewellery before activities involving water to prolong its lifespan and maintain its appearance.
How Should I Properly Care for My Jewellery?
To maintain the beauty and longevity of your jewellery, follow these care instructions:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe the jewellery after each wear to remove any dirt, oils, or residues. Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners, as they can damage the gold vermeil finish and gemstones.
- Avoid Chemical Exposure: Keep your jewellery away from strong chemicals, cleaning products, perfumes, and cosmetics. These substances can harm the gemstones' luster and may tarnish the gold vermeil.
- Storage: Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent damage and discoloration. To avoid scratches, store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a jewellery box with a fabric lining.
- Handle with Care: Put on your jewellery after applying cosmetics, lotions, or perfumes to avoid exposing them to chemicals. Remove your jewellery before engaging in activities that may subject them to excessive moisture, such as swimming or showering.
- Pearl Care: Pearls are delicate and require special care. Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures, as this can cause them to dry out and crack. Wipe pearls gently with a soft cloth after wearing to remove any oils or residues.
By following these simple care practices, you can ensure that your jewellery remains beautiful and pristine for years to come.
